Free Speech Union spokesperson Jonathan Ayling speaks to ACT MP Dr. James McDowall about the voting down - at first reading - of his "Education (Freedom of Expression) Amendment Bill". The Bill was designed to ensure there were consequences for universities that actively inhibited free of expression without legitimate cause. But the government didn't even want to debate the issue. What does the failure of the Bill to pass even a first reading say about how the government and their coalition partner view New Zealander's speech rights? A lot. And none of it is good! Dr. McDowall talks us through the revealing speeches given by Labour and Green supporters in opposition to his Bill and what the next steps to protect free speech on our campuses may be. fsu.nz/join
