Free To Speak
Council 'Codes of Conduct' Roundtable.
Former Prime Minister Sir Bill English described them as a threat to democracy a good 15 years ago but we didn't heed his warning. Today 'Codes of Conduct' are being used by Regional Councils to silence dissenting councilors by outlawing criticism and undermining the democratic process. Otago Regional Council made the foolish decision to try to silence Cr. Michael Laws - a man that was never going to take this lying down - and got a bloody nose for their efforts. But 'Codes of Conduct are a nationwide Free Speech and democracy issue as we explore in this roundtable chaired by Free Speech Union Spokesperson Stephen Franks and featuring Jackie Elliot of Kapiti Coast District Council, Peter Schulte of South Waikato District Council, and Nobby Clark, Deputy Mayor of Invercargill City Council.
